The town hall of Melun announces the closure of schools this Thursday and Friday, because of the heat wave. Six other municipalities are currently concerned in Seine-et-Marne.
The decision was left to the discretion of the municipalities. Due to the heat wave episode, Melun City Council decided to close the schools of the municipality on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 June, because of the temperatures recorded in the schools of the municipality. “It’s a precautionary principle,” says Henri Mellier, councillor delegate for education. Several school directors reported difficult situations for children. ”
In total, the measure, therefore, concerns the 24 schools of the commune, elementary and maternal, that is about 4,300 pupils. “It was up to 37 degrees in the dorms and even warmer temperatures are being announced for the weekend, with peaks of up to 40 degrees Celsius. We need to ensure the safety of children and it is not possible under these conditions, even if it will have consequences, in terms of organization, for families. ”

In parallel, the municipality decided to open the pool for free to the students, with an accompanying person. “They will have to present themselves with their notebooks to avoid abuses,” says one in Melun town hall. Other sites will be open as the library of the Astrolabe, from 10 am to 18 pm but also the movie Les Variétés, with a preferential rate for Melunais (€ 5).

“This is the first time we are faced with such a situation during the school year,” says Henri Mellier. In the future, it may be necessary to think about arrangements for school time because our priority is to guarantee the health of children. With this heat, there can also be a peak of pollution so it is better to be careful in such situations. The decision was taken by the municipality, in consultation with the academic inspectorate.

This measure only concerns schools, since colleges and high schools do not depend on the municipality, but on the Department and the Region. Contacted, the academic inspection indicates that for the moment, seven municipalities announced a closure for the weekend:
They are Melun, Villeneuve-Saint-Denis, Montcourt-Fromonville (only for kindergarten), Grandpuits, Pommeuse, Flagy and Vaux-le-Pénil.
