The previous night had been relatively calm. Clashes erupted on the night of Friday to Saturday when a hundred people attacked the police on Place de la Republique in Paris on the sidelines of the #NutDebout, the police have said.
Twelve people were arrested and placed in custody for “participation in a crowd and throwing projectiles,” said a statement from the police headquarters. “These will be the subject of appropriate legal action,” said the prefecture.
Police said “a hundred individuals formed in procession to start heading towards the Boulevard du Faubourg Saint-Martin.” The security forces, which have managed to contain them to the square, then came under attack by projectiles. A police car parked nearby was “deliberately torched and completely destroyed.” Another police vehicle and two vehicles were also damaged.
A relatively quiet week
These incidents come after a quiet week around Place de la Republiique, the scene of many nightly clashes in recent weeks from demonstrators on the side of the event #NuitDebout which has been on the square since 31st March.
In the night from Friday to Saturday, as the rally #NuitDebout was ending, a hundred people had thrown and burned pallets and trash before throwing projectiles at police. They were dispersed and the police arrested 21 people. The day before, while President François Hollande finished a television program, about 300 demonstrators, according to police, had wanted to leave the area to walk to the Elysee.
Since the beginning of the movement three weeks ago, a total of 36 people were arrested on the fringes of #NuitDebout, with 35 being charged with various offences, we have been told by police headquarters last Saturday.
