Seven departments have been placed on Orange alert for thunderstorms

Thunderstorms, sometimes violent, should affect at least seven departments of Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitanie this Monday 8th July 2019, from the beginning of the afternoon.

Seven departments of South-West were placed in orange alert for storms by Meteo France this Monday 8th July 2019:

  • Ariege,
  • the Haute-Garonne,
  • the Gers,
  • the Pyrénées-Atlantiques,
  • the Hautes-Pyrénées,
  • the Tarn
  • and Tarn-et-Garonne.

According to the Meteorological Institute, “the weather is generally calm over most of the country, with temperatures still warm in the south at the end of the night.”

“Moderate thunderstorms are coming back from Spain and overflowing into the extreme south of New Aquitaine.”



Up to 50 mm of rain, and wind gusts

“More organized and more virulent storms are developing during the afternoon on the Pyrenean departments and are moving towards the northeast by the next night,” explains Meteo France in its warning bulletin.

“These storms will be locally violent with sustained electrical activity and intense rainfall of up to 20 to 40 mm or locally more than 50 mm in a short time. They can also be accompanied by hail and gusts of wind between 80 and 100 km/h.”
