The tourism sector in Paris and the Ile-de-France has lost about 750 million euros in turnover in the first half of 2016. Attacks, strikes and floods taking foreign visitors away from the capital, according to a report released Tuesday by the Regional tourism Committee.
Tourist numbers fell by 6.4% in the region compared to the first half of 2015.
“It is time to become aware of the industrial disaster that the tourism sector is experiencing” , warns in a statement by Frédéric Valletoux, president of the Committee. “The hour is no longer in communication campaigns but beautiful and much to the establishment of a ORSEC. ”
Frédéric Valletoux believes that massive investment is needed to protect jobs in the sector and asked Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, to quickly meet the tourism professionals in the region.
Paris, still the most visited city in the world
Some 500 000 jobs are related to tourism in Ile-de-France, making it the largest industry in the region.
In France, tourism accounts for over 7% of GDP, of which 13% are generated in the Ile-de-France and Paris, still the most visited city in the world.
In hotels in Paris and Ile-de-France, the nights show a decline of 8.5% in the first half compared to the first six months of 2015, with a decline of 11.5% for international tourists and 4.8% for the French, according to the report of the Committee.
The number of Japanese visitors fell 46.2%. The decline reached 35% for the Russians, 19.6% for China and 5.7% for the Americans.
The slowdown in activity in France has helped to lower the AccorHotels operating income in the first half. Air France-KLM has said to expect a sharp decline in unit revenues in July and August.
