The assessment of the bad weather that included severe flooding that devastated parts of the Riviera on Saturday amounted on Monday night with 20 dead, with the discovery of the body of a woman of 82 years, while the disappearance of two Germans was announced.

Floods among the most deadly in recent years

The toll was 20 dead on Monday night, including a Briton, an Italian and a Portuguese. The prefecture also said at 6.30pm that two Germans were missing “in the Antibes area.” The statement is still officially “temporary “and will remain as the delicate rescue and clearing have not been brought to an end.  But the bad weather, with the torrential rain that caused the floods are already among the most deadly in recent years.

Areas in reconstruction

On site, volunteers and residents continued to work together to erase the scars of violent storms and mudslides that ravaged this region, that is use to welcoming tourists from all over the world.  At Biot, where three residents of a retirement home drowned, dozens of volunteers were armed on Monday morning with brooms, squeegees, buckets and shovels to help the victims.

Homes still without power

ERDF teams trying to bring the power to the 4,400 homes that were still without Monday at around 4pm.  Thirty generators were installed. “In residences, you must first drain the water before restoring the EDF electricity,” explained the Chief of Staff of the prefect of Alpes-Maritimes.

SNCF traffic still disrupted

The train traffic will be “greatly disturbed”  on Tuesday on the Mediterranean axis, following the floods that hit the French Riviera, the SNCF is hoping for “significant improvement” from Wednesday, according to reports the company has posted on its website. 

Seven people referred to court

Seven people suspected of having committed thefts in Cannes enjoying the chaos of weather on the night of Saturday to Sunday, were referred to court, said Monday the prosecutor of Grasse, rejecting the term “looting”.  Two Ukrainians, caught in the act of stealing a GPS and a radio in cars in Cannes, were to be immediately tried on Monday night.
