Before the sharp increase of 50 cents expected in March 2019, price adjustments for some packets of cigarettes are expected on the 1st January.
This is the seventh revision of the price of tobacco since the arrival of Emmanuel Macron in power. As of January 1st, 2019, some brands of cigarettes will see a slight increase . On average, prices will remain stable, but adjustments, set by industry, are expected.
A ministerial decree was published in the Official Journal on Thursday, 20th December. Several brands of cigarettes are affected by increases:
- Lucky Strike: Ice Blue Ice (7.80 euros instead of 7.70), Ice Green Select (8.30 euros instead of 8), Original red 100% Tobacco Select (8.40 euros instead of 8) …
- Pall Mall Red Select (8.30 euros instead of 8) …
- Blue Rothmans (8.30 euros instead of 8), Rothmans Red Select (8.30 euros instead of 8) …
- Winfield red (8 euros instead of 7.90), Winfield Rouge Regular (8.60 instead of 7.70) …
- Gauloises Brunes (9 euros instead of 8.90) …
- Gitanes (9.40 euros instead of 9.30) …
- Marlboro red (8.20 euros instead of 8) …
- Philip Morris Bleue (8 euros instead of 7.90) …

Objective: 10 euros per pack
Several major increases are expected in the course of 2019. To reach the target of 10 euros per package in 2020 set by the government, four deadlines are planned.
The dates of the next increases:
- 50 cents in March 2019.
- 50 cents in November 2019.
- 50 cents in March 2020.
- 40 cents in November 2020.
25 million euros of additional revenue
Originally, the September decree provided for the first increase of 2019 to take place in April. So it will be finally a month earlier, in March, as provided in the finance bill .
As a key, this change in the calendar could make it possible to report, in 2019 and 2020, 25 million euros of additional revenue to Social Security.
