The Fuel Shortage is Gaining Ground in France: These 2,500 Service Stations Dry of Petrol and Diesel this Monday
The prices of petrol and diesel are still very high this Monday and are strangling French motorists.
The weeks follow one another and are similar for road users, always caught by the throat exorbitant fuel prices. This Monday 21st September 2026, the price of diesel amounts to 2.343 euros per litre, according to our calculation. That of the SP 95 at 2,207 euros, the SP 95-E10 at 2,128 euros and the SP 98 at 2,258 euros.
Added to this are numerous gas stations in a state of shortage. The Minister of the Economy spoke this morning on France Inter of 17% of them are in shortage of at least one fuel. “91% of them are Total stations”, he specifies, the oil giant having implemented a price cap on diesel and gasoline in its stations.
Currently, prices at TotalEnergies stations are capped at 1.99 euros per liter of gasoline and 2.25 euros for diesel.

The government calculates shortages as follows, according to the site which references the state of service stations in France : If the station has a category of a product, petrol or diesel, the product is not considered out of stock and the station is not listed among those in difficulty. ”
So, if the point of sale no longer has SP 98 but still has SP 95-E10 in stock, it is not considered to be in shortage. We take this parameter into account. According to our calculations. there are around 2,500 dry stations of at least one fuel in France of the 9,900 in the country. Or almost 25%.

Visibility
Despite the situation, Roland Lescure ensures don’t worry “for the next two months”. The government always has “visibility over one or two months because we know where the tankers are, we know what we have in the stocks”.
Overall we have strategic stocks which are at full capacity in France, so we have no supply issues at this stage.
As a reminder, fuel stocks and prices depend on the evolution of the war in the Middle East between the United States and Iran.
Sébastien Lecornu will hold two meetings in Matignon on Monday with ministers: one in the morning with the directors of central administrations on oil and gas supplies, and the other in the afternoon dedicated to “short and medium term support” french people facing soaring prices at the pump.
