Employees multiply round trips between the old and the new building for transferring commodities. As of Wednesday morning, the historic supermarket in the street of Saint Jean d’Angely changes dimension.
Built on 960 square meters in 1974, the U Express leaves room for an ultramodern Super U of 2,000 square meters. No big geographical upheaval for customers who have just the road to cross – the new building is located opposite the bar The Arédien and pharmacy – but new habits to take in an enlarged supermarket, which doubles its number of products. “It is a store for the next 40 years, summarizes Laurent Bielsa, its director. Our main challenge will be to do everything so that it keeps its soul and its family side.” For here the regulars on the cheek to cashiers. The old store, the only one of the town, will close its doors at noon on Sunday.

The project of € 6.5 million is in the pipeline since 2014. Guided by the desire to snack even more market share to competitor Intermarché Saint-Cybard, located 2 kilometers away. “In terms of turnover, it is among the best in the region in the Co-op Atlantic Group” , supports Laurent Bielsa, detailing the new waiting customers: a fish counter, a seasonal bazaar – Christmas toys are already on the shelves – the arrival of references appliances, more homemade by butchers and organic section.
Other services available, customers can rent cars, buy concert tickets, collect their parcels, to make duplicates of their keys and even wash their clothes. “The most important for us is the creation of a drive. Making sessions will be organised in hand interface for customers,” promises the director. Two shops, service-oriented, open at the store entrance. The service station, however, remains in its present place. “Projects are under study, I can not say more.”
Although Super U adopts new generation of super-parking for 200 cars, bus stops have been moved, right in front of the entrance. A roundabout was also created to access the supermarket, hoping to beat the longevity record of its predecessor.
