“It will be Spectacular”: Falling Temperatures and Heavy Rain, which awaits France Next Week
While a new late heat episode began in France, with another 40°C forecast, autumn weather will follow. Forecast.
This Thursday 3rd September 2026, a new monthly record of heat was established with 36.9°C at the century-old station of Perpignan (Pyrénées-orientales), ahead of the 36.8°C of September 1, 1936.
In Pézenas, in the department of Hérault, it did 37.1°C. Absolute record for the month of September, there too. And this Friday 4th September, the heat is intensifying across the country, with 36°C to 39°C forecast for southern Aquitaine, Occitanie and the Rhône valley. Very strong heat, often record for the month of September, which will persist in the south of France until the very beginning of next week, often with up to 37°C to 40°C.
“But, between Tuesday 8th September and Wednesday 9th September, the drop in temperatures will be spectacular”, warns the meteorologist Yann Amice.
Temperatures drop and rainy episode
While temperatures will flirt with 30°C in the North and 40°C in the South this weekend, sometimes count less than 20°C in the North in the middle of next week and 22-23°C in the South. And the rain will also make a comeback, with the arrival of a small low pressure center via Brittany on Tuesday 8th September. A rainy episode, which could be marked, which will cross France from northwest to southeast until Wednesday 9th September.

The last notable late heat episode was in September 2023 (September 3-11, 2023). This weekend’s episode should, however, be less extensive geographically, but more intense in the southern half of the country with numerous monthly maximum temperature records until Sunday, therefore, before this radical change in weather between next Tuesday and Wednesday.
This Tuesday 8th September 2026, a disrupted passage in the north of the country could bring rain, or even marked winds.
Beyond this heat episode, sub-seasonal forecasts do not yet show any notable or comparable anomaly over the next five weeks. At this time, if caution is required, a trend is emerging and it tends to move towards a deadlock situation, with a high pressure center positioned between the Atlantic and the British Isles.
Such a configuration would have the effect of channeling the disturbed and humid flow towards the Mediterranean basin rather than the rest of the country, to be monitored given the context of the surface waters of the Mediterranean Sea which remain particularly high.
This scenario remains a simple underlying trend and not a detailed forecast that we will confirm over the next few deadlines.
