Avian flu: A New Outbreak, the Seventh, Detected in Dordogne

An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza has just been confirmed in Beauregard-et-Bassac, in a duck farm located in the regulated zone already in place since the detection of the first outbreak in Vergt

A seventh case of avian influenza was detected in Dordogne, in Beauregard-et-Bassac, indicates the prefecture in a press release published this Friday, December 5. It concerns a breeding of ducks, which had been vaccinated, located within the regulated perimeter since the discovery of a first home, in Vergt, on November 13th.

To avoid any risk of spreading the virus to other farms, the prefect issued an order modifying the regulated protection zones (ZP) and surveillance zones (ZS), which are respectively set up within a radius of 3 and 10 km around the contaminated establishment.

The 3 km protection zone is extended to the municipalities of Douville (the entire municipality) and Saint-Martin-des-Combes. The 10 km surveillance zone is extended to Campsegret (the entire commune), Beleymas, Eyraud-Crempse-Maurens (on the eastern part) and Lamonzie-Montastruc (on the northern part).

900 ducks slaughtered

As part of the fight against the spread of the virus, the 900 ducks present on the farm affected by the outbreak of avian influenza will be slaughtered. State services, in particular the Departmental Directorate of Employment, Labor, Solidarity and Population Protection (DDETSPP), indicate that the breeder concerned will be compensated for the losses suffered by this operation. “The ducks from this farm had all been vaccinated against highly pathogenic avian influenza [HPAI], in accordance with regulations. It is recognized that vaccination does not completely eliminate the risk of infection of poultry if the virus is introduced into livestock farming. On the other hand, it reduces the excretion of the virus and viral circulation”, the prefecture also specifies.

Vaccinated duck farms in restricted areas will be subject to reinforced post-vaccination surveillance. In these areas, all places where poultry and captive birds are kept are subject to specific requirements. The movement of poultry and other captive birds is prohibited, except for exemptions granted by the DDETSPP. Carrying out self-checks is made compulsory by prefectural decree.
