Four Loire-Atlantique Streams Restored “To Bring Natural Environments Back to Life”

The Brivet Watershed Union restored 7.6 km of waterways in 2025, strengthening ecosystems and reducing the risk of flooding. Cost of the operation: 400,000€.

The work carried out by the Brivet Watershed Union (SBVB) has just been completed for this year 2025! From August to early October, the teams worked on several rivers in the watershed, taking advantage of ideal weather conditions for access for machines to the plots.

“This year, 7.6 km of waterways were restored to bring natural environments back to life”, says Justine Malgogne, head of the aquatic environments division.

A restoration whose total cost amounts to more than 400,000€.

Before these operations, selective cutting of bank vegetation was carried out under the management of the SBVB in order to facilitate the completion of the work.

The projects concerned the streams of the Gatepaille bridge in Bouvron, the Basse-ville in Quilly, the Indève in Campbon and the Châtelier in Saint-andré-des-eaux.

“These valuable ecosystems play key roles for everyone, including naturally contributing to the purification of water quality. ”

Mattis Rotureau, aquatic environments technician at SBVB.

This work makes it possible to: diversify flows and aquatic habitats, thus promoting the life of freshwater fish, insects and plants; promote groundwater recharge and reduce the risk of flooding, giving rivers more space and flexibility.

This work is part of the 2023-2025 Territorial Water Contract, supported by the SBVB with the financial support of the Loire-Bretagne Water Agency, the Pays de la Loire Region, the Loire-Atlantique Department and the Brivet watershed union itself.

The project also benefits from the support of the Prefecture, communities of municipalities and agglomerations in the region: Carene, CapAtlantique, communities of municipalities of Pontchâteau Saint-Gildas-des-Bois, Estuaire et Sillon, and Blain Region.

“These actions could not see the light of day without the collaboration of local owners, farmers and municipalities, who facilitate access to plots and support these collective approaches”, specifies the SBVB.

The Brivet Watershed Union is a local authority dedicated to the balanced management of water and aquatic environments as well as flood prevention in the Brière-Brivet territory, a vast 800 km² complex located between the Vilaine estuary and that of the Loire, between the Guérande peninsula and the Nantes-Brest canal. Contact: 02 40 45 60 92; website: www.sbvb.fr
