Road safety: the number of road deaths is stable in June 2019

According to road safety figures, 290 people died on the roads in June 2019, as much as in June 2018. But mortality is increasing in Overseas territories of France.

The number of road deaths in mainland France remained stable in June 2019. According to preliminary estimates of the National Interministerial Observatory of Road Safety (ONISR) published Tuesday 9th July, 2019, 290 people died on the roads last month as much as in June 2018.

The number of personal injuries fell slightly (5,114 as against 5,420 in June 2018). The mortality of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists is stable or slightly decreasing. On the other hand, road deaths are on the rise in the Overseas Departments (23 people lost their lives on the roads in June, 10 more than in June 2018).


Year 2018 at historic lows

In the first six months of the year, Road Safety records nine fewer deaths (1,515, -0.6%) than in the first half of 2018, which ended with a “historic” low in the metropolis (3,248 killed, 3,488 with Overseas).

Consequence of 80km/h?

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner welcomed these good figures in a speech delivered before the National Council of Road Safety (CNSR), recalling that since the introduction of the lowering of the authorized speed to 80 km/h In July 2018, 206 lives were saved (compared to the five-year average from 2013 to 2017).
