Tesla to launch the Model 3, lower cost Electric Car

The American car manufacturer Tesla will deliver on Friday the first models of its new Model 3, prevailing over an embryonic market electric car. With the appearance of this model of mid-range (about 35,000 dollars), Tesla will confirm its decision in advance to be “all electric”, while several manufacturers are trying to drill or develop other technologies for clean cars from the future.

It is crucial for the future of the American manufacturer Tesla.  The first models of its “Model 3” electric car, smaller and less expensive than the “Model S” and “X” to conquer the general public, will be delivered on Friday.

Tesla boss Elon Musk, has planned a ceremony “festive” in the presence of employees in the plant in Fremont, not far from San Francisco (western United States) during delivery vehicles in the first thirty customers, who are mostly employees of the group.

Billionaire with many hats

Elon Musk, a billionaire with many hats, also head of SpaceX, announced earlier this month the launch of production, which should reach 100 units in August 1500 and at least September before, hopefully t- he 20 000 per month at the end of the year.

The Model 3 is an essential step in the ambitions of Mr. Musk, who wants to Tesla, founded in 2003, a vehicle manufacturer in mass production.

“Tesla’s strategy is to enter the market by the high-end” and “to quickly position lower, to produce larger volumes and lower prices with each new model” wrote billionaire in 2006

Objective: 500 000 cars in 2018

According to projections, the manufacturer has sold in the first six months of the year between 47 000 and 50 000 cars in the world thanks to the “Model S” and “Model X”. The “Model 3” should enable it to achieve its goal of 500,000 cars sold in 2018 and one million by 2020.

By comparison, the two leading global manufacturers, German Volkswagen and Japanese Toyota each sell more than 10 million cars per year.

A success of “Model 3” would also reassure the markets, some analysts questioned the group’s growth prospects, considering that the demand for “Model S” and “Model X” caps.

345 km range

“Smaller” and “simpler” than its big sisters, the   Model 3″ will be more accessible: it costs 35,000 dollars (about 30,000 €), half the base price of the “S”.

The “3” is “a lot less options available,” the “Model S,” says Tesla, but it also has the autopilot system, which allows the car to perform only a large number of maneuvers.

Its battery allows it to roll “at least 345 km ‘ , according to the group, against almost 600 km for the Tesla model the most powerful.

Tesla has created a “niche”

So far the strategy has paid Elon Musk: although most manufacturers currently have in their range of electric cars of various size and autonomy, the group now prevails on the market  the electrical because it has created a “niche” with X models and S.

At the point of playing this year to General Motors, the biggest US auto manufacturer with more than three million vehicles sold in the US last year, the honorary position as the leading market capitalization on Wall Street.

The “Model 3” , which was the subject of nearly 400,000 pre-orders, already has a direct competitor, the “Bolt” from General Motors. But it should not make him much shade: it sold poorly, to the point that GM plans to temporarily stop production lines in the United States to sell stocks.

A  “giga-factory”  batteries

Both electric and partially autonomous, Tesla cars combine two aspects considered the future of the automobile, in which not only working most builders but also IT giants like Google or Apple.

Clean cars are part of the environmental approach that guides a large part of many projects Elon Musk, 45.

Present in solar energy, with the company SolarCity solar panels but also in the space race with SpaceX, Elon Musk also wants to develop batteries for the home. He also revived, without taking part directly Hyperloop the project for carrying on Earth in capsules passengers traveling in a low-pressure tube at a speed of up to 1,200 km / h.

The rise of the automobile production is also accompanied by the construction of a “giga-factory” farms in Nevada (west) whose production should begin by the end of the year.

Tesla reigns over an embryonic market

The American car manufacturer Tesla will deliver Friday the first copies of the new “Model 3,” currently reigns on an embryonic market electric car.

With the appearance of this model of mid-range (about 35,000 dollars), Tesla will confirm its decision in advance “all electric” when many manufacturers are trying to pierce or develop other technologies for clean car future that want to encourage public policies.

The “all electric”

According to projections, Tesla sold in the first six months of the year between 47 000 and 50 000 cars in the world thanks to its two models already on the market, the “Model S” and “Model X”. The Model 3 will enable it to reach its goal of 500,000 cars sold in 2018 and one million by 2020. By comparison, the world’s two largest manufacturers, Germany’s Volkswagen and Japanese Toyota each sell more than 10 million cars annually.

General Motors, the first American manufacturer with more than three million vehicles sold in the US last year, is currently the main competitor to Tesla on the all-electric market: there this year launched the “Bolt “that will compete directly with the” Model 3 “Tesla. But Bolt is selling poorly: only 1642 copies in June 7600 and since the beginning of the year. GM plans to temporarily stop production lines in the United States to sell stocks.

Most manufacturers now have in their range of electric cars of various size and autonomy. Nissan offers the United States a small model, the Leaf, which has sold 1,500 copies in June, slightly less than Bolt. But only Tesla has secured for now a real “niche” with cars whose autonomy can reach 600 km.

Plug-in hybrids

Without being “all electric”, these cars are also considered through their own use of electricity to move. A conventional hybrid like the Toyota Prius launched in 1997, used alternately and automatically, electricity or gasoline depending on the requirements of its engine but its fossil fuel consumption remains significant (about 5 liters / 100 km).

A PHV can it be recharged at regular intervals to use only electricity, not using gasoline when the batteries are empty, unlike Tesla using only electricity.

According to the site InsideEvs.com (Electric Vehicles) it sold a total of 158,600 electric cars and “plug-in” in 2016 in the United States and nearly 777,500 in the world, the best-selling models to States being STATES Tesla “Model S”, the Chevrolet Volt (a gas / electric hybrid) Tesla “Model X”, the Ford Fusion Energi and the Nissan Leaf, the five cars being the only ones to exceed the 10,000 copies sold .

hydrogen

This technology is described for several decades as the other track for a 100% clean vehicle using a fuel cell which releases into the atmosphere as water vapor.

Honda, with Clarity and Toyota, with Mirai, already have such vehicles on the road but their distribution is confidential therefore fault network of service stations for refueling hydrogen.

Just over 700 Mirai were sold in the United States, primarily in California, over the first six months of the year. Honda elapsed about 300 Clarity.
