Near Brest, a major archaeological discovery

Scientists have uncovered the artistic traces of the Upper Paleolithic in Plougastel-Daoulas (Finistère). Besides being very rare in Europe, they are also the oldest of its kind in Brittany.

With excavations that began in 2013, teams have discovered incredible artistic traces of Paleolithic: forty engravings on small fragments of schist.

“Their value is valuable on many levels, says Nicolas Naudinot. First, at the regional level: it is the oldest in Brittany. “

In addition, the remains of this kind are very rare. “  There are very few in Europe  , says the researcher. Representative animal heads surrounded by rays, they are unique artistically. Especially for the period of former Azilian, little known researchers.

The next dig on the site, owned by the County Council, will take place in the summer of 2017.
