VIDEO. A Powerful Tornado Breaks Out South of Carcassonne, Significant Damage Feared

A tornado broke out in the area of the communes of Leuc and Pomas, south of Carcassonne, this Monday 24th August. The Aude department is classified as orange storm alert.

Extreme Alert! A tornado broke out, Monday 24th August 2026 around 5 p.m., in the south of Carcassonne.

The department of Aude is located in an area which has been issued an orange storm alert by Météo-France.

Homes affected

 Hailstones 5 cm in diameter would have fallen nearby, report infoccitanie.

Significant damage already appears to be reported. A house was completely razed by the tornado.

A video of the village of Pomas, crossed by the tornado, show numerous roofs blown away. The Aude SDIS indicates that the roads leading to Pomas were closed by the gendarmerie.

At the moment, the SDIS cannot communicate on the human toll following the passage of the tornado, “but no alarming information on this point at this time”, informs the latter, around 5:45 p.m.

The phenomenon towards Narbonnais

Floods are noted in some streets of Carcassonne.

The meteorological phenomenon seems to be heading towards Narbonnais. The municipality of Narbonne indicates that its weather services strengthen their alert for the municipalities north of Narbonne with vigilance at the security stage The wind will strengthen and the rain could be sustained in places ”.
