Firewood: How Much Does a Stere of Wood Cost? Our Price Map this year in France

The price of a cubic meter of wood varies depending on several criteria: species, type of wood… but also depending on its region.

As autumn rain, cooler winds, and falling temperatures arrive, many French households are preparing to stock up on firewood. But depending on the supplier, region, and type of wood, prices can vary widely. To help you plan ahead, we’ve taken a closer look at firewood costs across France and what to know before buying.

Firewood Prices on the Rise

According to ADEME (the French Agency for Ecological Transition), around 7.5 million households used wood heating in 2024, making it one of the most affordable energy sources.

However, as Frédéric Pechavy, president of the Pechavy energy group and member of the FF3C (French Federation of Fuels, Fuels and Heating), explains, prices are “slightly rising” after several years of stability. This increase is linked to higher operating costs — from equipment and fuel to transport and distribution.

This development is explained in particular by the increase in operating costs (equipment, fuel, transport, etc.).

It is therefore useful to know where to turn to stock up on wood. For wet wood, the FF3C recommends purchasing directly from forestry operators.

Where to Buy and When

Choosing the right supplier and timing your purchase can make a big difference.

  • Wet wood → Ideally purchased 2–3 years in advance to allow proper drying. Forestry operators are the best source.

  • Dry or densified logs → Best bought from specialized distributors to guarantee quality.

  • Parboiled logs → Recommended to stock up during summer, before demand surges in the heating season.

Don’t Forget Chimney Sweeping

Before lighting that first fire, maintenance is essential. A 2023 decree requires at least one chimney sweep per year (with some municipalities demanding more). Poorly maintained chimneys reduce efficiency and can pose risks such as carbon monoxide poisoning or even fires.

The Price of a Stere of Wood by Region

The price of firewood depends on several factors:

  • Wood type → Oak and beech (higher calorific value) cost more than softer woods like plane or chestnut.

  • Packaging → Bulk wood is generally cheaper than palletized deliveries.

  • Region → Prices are influenced by availability, transport costs, and demand.

According to site JF Wood energyJF Wood Energy, a stere currently ranges from €89 to €115 depending on the region.

Tips for Cleaner, More Efficient Heating

To limit pollution and maximize efficiency, ADEME recommends burning only dry, split, untreated logs. Properly stored wood not only heats better but also reduces harmful emissions.
