Brittany: This Department has Abandoned Three Road Bypass Projects on standby since 2021

The department of Ille-et-Vilaine has just announced the abandonment of the road bypass projects which were planned in Fougères, Vitré and Châteaubourg

The essential

  • The road bypass projects of Fougères, Vitré and Châteaubourg in Ille-et-Vilaine are definitively buried.

  • For the department, these three road projects appear incompatible with climate and budgetary issues. “

  • It will instead invest in carbon-free mobility.

The decision will surely anger many motorists. While the projects have been on hold since 2021, the department of Ille-et-Vilaine announced this Friday the definitive abandonment of three major road projects, namely the Fougères, Vitré and Châteaubourg bypasses which had been in the works for many years. In these three sectors, the department recognizes that traffic is sometimes difficult with localized congestion phenomena, particularly during peak hours. ”

But after three years of studies and consultations with elected officials and citizens, he noted that these bypasses would not solve all traffic problems. In great financial difficulty like so many other departments, the community also makes no secret of the fact that these three projects were too costly for its finances. “They are also not compatible with climate and environmental issues and do not achieve consensus among residents”, adds the department, chaired by socialist Jean-Luc Chenut.

Priority given to carbon-free mobility

In 2021, the latter, after an agreement made with environmentalists, had also mentioned the abandonment of these three road projects but without this being definitive. “It is a decision consistent with our political orientations, our majority agreement and our mandate project”, react the elected representatives of the majority in a press release.

Rather than building roads, the department prefers instead to invest more in carbon-free mobility by continuing to develop your cycling plan and by promoting it carpooling. To discuss the solutions envisaged, the department will organize meetings in the three cities concerned from September 17th to October 10th.
