China: A Young British Woman Successfully Operated on in China for Rare Double Scoliosis

MIRACLE OF SCIENCE: A British woman suffering from double scoliosis underwent successful surgery in Shanghai, after doctors in the United Kingdom deemed her case too complex
At 12, a young British girl suffering from double scoliosis was operated on in China after doctors in his country deemed his case too difficult to treat. Within a few months, the deformity of his spine had become such that it compressed her lungs and threatened her health and treatment was vital.
According to RTL Belgium, British specialists finally directed the family towards Shanghai, where Professor Junlin Yang, international figure of the surgery spinal. His team carried out an extremely complex procedure, consisting of gradually straightening the spine using a combination of derotation, osteotomy and screw fixation. The operation, carried out in four hours, not only corrected a curvature of 100 degrees, but also restored the teenager’s normal breathing.
Spectacular results
The results are spectacular: the young girl patient regained an upright posture, better lung capacity and even grew several centimeters. For her family, who no longer saw a solution in the United Kingdom, this trip to China represented an unexpected opportunity.
This success illustrates Shanghai’s medical ambition. The city, which opened thirteen hospitals additional since 2023, invests massively in cutting-edge techniques in order to attract an international patient base. More and more Westerners are going there to benefit from surgical innovations that their local health systems cannot always offer.
