AMBITION: Elon Musk bets on producing more than 1.5 million of the Tesla electric SUV each year, up from a few hundred thousand today
Once again, Elon Musk clearly shows his ambition. For him, the Tesla Model Y will be the best-selling car in the world from 2022, or 2023 at the latest. The boss of the Californian manufacturer made the announcement on the occasion of the publication of the brand’s quarterly results, reports Phonandroid.
To achieve this goal, the electric SUV will have to dethrone the Toyota Corolla, currently at the top of the standings. The Japanese manufacturer produces around 1.5 million each year, against 442,000 Model 3 / Model Y sold in 2020, says Automobile-Propre. Last year Toyota also grabbed second place thanks to the RV4, followed by two Honda brand cars.
If you missed TSLA’s earnings, the highlight was @elonmusk sharing in the call that he thinks Tesla’s Model Y will become the top-selling vehicle of any kind in 2022 or 2023.
World’s top-selling car currently is Corolla at 1.5m units/year.

Not available in France
According to the calculations of investor Dave Lee, Tesla will be able to make a net profit of 3.6 billion dollars for the year if the Model Y becomes number one. By comparison, the company’s net profit exceeded $ 438 million in the first quarter of 2021, for a total of $ 10.93 billion in revenue. As soon as Tesla can produce two million vehicles per year, the firm should be able to offer a 100% electric model at $ 25,000.
As L’Argus reminds us, the Model Y is still not available in France for the moment. On the other hand, 6,477 Model 3 found buyers last year. The manufacturer also plans to double its sales in France in 2021, in particular, thanks to the Gigafactory soon to be launched in Berlin.
