Nicknamed “The Girl with the Golden Eyes” – they were, in fact, yellow-green – she has appeared in 35 films and sold more than 35 million albums, throughout a very little straight existence. “My career is odds and ends but my life is filled from start to finish,” assured the woman who, married five times, was also a theatre actress, writer, antique dealer and auctioneer.

Maïténa Doumenach, her real name, was born on October 5, 1939, in Soulac-Sur-Mer (Gironde), daughter of an industrialist. At the age of 3, she says thirty-five years later, she is raped by a neighbour: “Impossible to talk about it for decades. “Without this rape,” she says, “I would not have done a public job that went against my natural shyness. I chose an outlet job “.

As a young girl, she was attracted by the convent but became passionate about theatre in high school in Paris, then won an actress contest, organized by Europe 1, in 1959. A year later, she appeared at the cinema next to Alain Delon in Plein soleil (by René Clément) and, in 1961, in La Fille aux yeux d’or (from a novel by Balzac), by Jean-Gabriel Albicocco, whom she married.

She then plays in Joyeuses Pâques and Flic or thug by Georges Lautner, with Jean-Paul Belmondo, Henri Verneuil’s Les Morfalous , La Chasse à l’homme , by Edouard Molinaro, Fucking Fernand , by Gérard Mordillat (nominated for the Caesar Best Supporting Actress), Tangos, Exile of Gardel , Fernando Solanas (1985 Jury Prize in Venice) etc. It was also directed by Chabrol, Granier-Deferre, Deville, Mocky and others.

“I do not have a voice, I have a stamp”

In 1963 released his first single: Les Vendanges de l’amour, written by Danyel Gerard. This is the success and the tubes will follow each other: IIvan, Boris et moi, Il a neigé sur Yesterday (song tribute to the Beatles), Viens sur la montagne,Marie douceur, Marie colèreQue calor la vida etc. She is a pioneer in world music, drawing inspiration from American and European folklore. While standing aside from the show biz, she filled the Olympia in 1969, touring the world. “I do not have a voice, I have a stamp,” she noted, however, downplaying her personal talent.

Little by little, she gives up the recordings, prefers writing (she writes her own songs but also a book remarked:  Tales and legends of my private life ), settles in Geneva (she will have the dual French-Swiss nationality) where she holds an art gallery. In 1994, she published a compilation of her songs in four volumes, covering her thirty-year career. She also plays: in 2000, she plays a shocking Maria Callas (nominated to Molières).

Marie Laforêt was married five times, had three children with Judas Azuelos, a businessman of Moroccan Jewish origin, then with Alain Kahn-Sriber, businessman and art collector. Her daughter, Lisa Azuelos, director of the movie “LOL” , with Sophie Marceau, did not hide difficult relations with her mother, who, for her part, admitted to being sometimes too absent with her children.
