The departments concerned are: Vienna, Deux-Sèvres, Charente-Maritime, Charente, Gironde, Dordogne, the Lot-et-Garonne, Les Landes, Gers, the Pyrenees Atlantiques and the Hautes-Pyrenees.
The weather is due to change from 2pm, and the orange alert is scheduled to end on Wednesday at midnight.
A risk of heavy hailstorms
“This wave will be marked by a stormy risk of heavy falls of hail locally, violent gusts of wind often reaching 80-90 km/h but significantly exceeding the 100 km/h in a localised manner. The rainfall intensities will be very strong, quite frequently we can save from 20 to 30 mm of rain over periods of less than one hour, and accumulations of 50 to 60 mm (50 to 60 litres of water per square meter) are considered very locally, “warns Meteo France.
“In a very hot environment with temperatures quickly rising above 32 degrees or 35 degrees in the Dordogne Valley, an active storm degradation is taking place this afternoon. The first storms are expected to hit the west of the Pyrenees and the coastal departments of Aquitaine in the early afternoon, then multiply rapidly. They will ease in the evening and first part of next night, although a few more isolated and less strong thunderstorms are then possible, “according to forecasters.
