Russia vetoes the resolution by France on the war in Syria

WAR:  Moscow supported another text which calls for a cessation of hostilities in Syria, without mentioning the bombing …

Niet. Russia has vetoed this Saturday night the resolution of France on Syria at the UN, preventing its adoption.

Two rival texts

The United Nations Security Council was to consider two rival texts calling for a cease-fire in Aleppo. Of the fifteen members of the Security Council countries, only Russia and Venezuela opposed the French proposal. China and Angola abstained. The other eleven countries of the Council, including the US and the UK, supported the text.

One of these resolutions is defended by France calling for the end of raids in Syria’s second city. The other is Russia, the mainstay of the Syrian regime, which calls for a cessation of hostilities without mentioning the bombing.

For Hollande, a country that vetoes is a discredit

The head of state, Francois Hollande, said on Saturday in Tulle (Corrèze) that a country that would veto the French text “would be discredited in the eyes of the world. It would be responsible for the continuing abuses.”

The UN Security Council is demanding “immediate action to save Aleppo”, said the French foreign minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, just before the vote on the text of France.”I am aware maneuvers including from Russia to delay the decision, but it is not acceptable in view of what is happening there”, added Jean-Marc Ayrault.

Aleppo is the main issue of the conflict in Syria for five years, leaving more than 300,000 dead and causing the worst humanitarian tragedy since the Second World War.
