El Niño isn’t just getting stronger—it’s being supercharged by climate change, according to a major new study. Coral records from the Galápagos show events are now over a third more powerful than before the Industrial Age, with profound implications for weather, food prices, and the global economy as the 2026–27 El Niño builds toward historic intensity.

A 900-Year “Time Machine” Hidden in Coral

At the heart of the discovery is a natural archive: coral skeletons from the Galápagos Islands. Lead author Julia Cole, a paleoclimatologist at the University of Michigan, and her team analysed 29 coral fossils spanning roughly 900 years. By measuring chemical ratios locked into the coral’s growth bands, they reconstructed month-by-month sea surface temperatures across centuries—effectively creating a climate “time machine”.

This long-term perspective is crucial. Short-term instrumental records only go back about 150 years, but the coral data stretches back to the medieval period, allowing scientists to separate natural variability from human-driven trends.

What the Coral Data Reveals

  • El Niño events are now more than 36% stronger than in the pre-industrial era.

  • In the past 40 years alone, El Niño variability has surged by about 16%, closely tracking the rise in global temperatures from fossil fuel emissions.

  • Before the Industrial Age, there is no evidence of El Niño behaviour as intense as what we’ve seen in recent decades.

“We are seeing a trend of stronger El Niños and the one we have now is consistent with that trend—it’s not a fluke,” Cole said.

The 2026–27 El Niño: A “Very Strong” Event Underway

While the coral study provides the long-view context, the present-day signal is unmistakable. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has forecast a near-100% chance that the current El Niño will persist through February 2027 and intensify to “very strong”—the highest category on its four-tier scale.

Weekly sea surface temperature anomalies in the central Pacific are already around 2.7°C above normal, well past the 2°C threshold for “very strong” classification, with further strengthening expected.

“I have never seen an El Niño signal this intense in our forecasts,” said Adam Scaife, head of long-range forecasting at the UK Met Office. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that “El Niño is being supersized before our eyes”.

Why Stronger El Niños Matter for Everyone

El Niño is not an abstract climate concept—it’s a driver of real-world disruption. When the central and eastern Pacific warm unusually, it reshapes global atmospheric circulation, triggering cascading effects:

Weather and Disaster Risks

  • Heavier rainfall and flooding in parts of South America, the southern US, and East Africa.

  • Drought and heatwaves across Southeast Asia, Australia, and parts of southern Africa.

  • More intense tropical cyclones in some basins, with heightened storm surge and wind damage risks.

For readers in France and Western Europe, El Niño’s influence is more indirect but still relevant: it can nudge winter jet streams, affecting storm tracks, rainfall patterns, and even energy demand.

Food Security and Prices

El Niño’s fingerprint often shows up in harvests and commodity markets:

  • Reduced yields for rice, palm oil, coffee, and sugar in key producing regions.

  • Disrupted fisheries off South America as warm waters displace nutrient-rich upwellings.

  • Knock-on effects for global food prices, hitting low-income households hardest.

The World Food Programme has warned that 274 million people could face acute hunger by the end of 2027 if conditions worsen.

Economic Impact at Scale

Citigroup economists estimate a “super El Niño” could inflict up to $7 trillion in global economic losses over five years, through damaged infrastructure, lost productivity, and higher insurance claims.

For digital entrepreneurs and content publishers, this matters because:

  • Ad budgets tighten when economies slow.

  • Consumer spending shifts toward essentials and away from discretionary digital products.

  • News cycles pivot to climate, disaster, and policy stories—creating both risks and opportunities for niche sites.

The Science Debate: Consensus and Caveats

Not every scientist is fully convinced by the coral-based conclusions. Michael Mann of the University of Pennsylvania has pointed out that volcanic eruptions and solar variability could partly explain some of the long-term patterns seen in proxy records.

Zeke Hausfather of Berkeley Earth cautioned about “pretty big uncertainties” when comparing ancient coral data to modern instrumental measurements. Still, he described the study as “more weight on the side of the scale for a detectable climate impact”.

Even with these caveats, the broader scientific picture is clear:

  • Global average temperatures are at record highs.

  • Ocean heat content is rising.

  • Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe.

The coral study adds a critical piece: it suggests that the internal variability of the climate system—El Niño itself—is being amplified, not just the background warming.

A Dangerous Feedback Loop

One of the most concerning findings is the potential feedback between El Niño and global warming:

  1. Global warming supercharges El Niño by increasing the baseline ocean heat available to fuel strong events.

  2. Strong El Niños release vast amounts of stored ocean heat into the atmosphere, pushing global temperatures even higher in the short term.

  3. This creates a self-reinforcing cycle: hotter planet → stronger El Niños → hotter planet.

This dynamic helps explain why some El Niño years (like 2016 and potentially 2026–27) see sharp spikes in global temperature records.

The Bottom Line: Adaptation Isn’t Enough

“We can prepare and try to adapt,” Julia Cole said. “But we also need to look at the root cause, which is the fossil fuels we are burning every day.”

For policymakers, the message is clear: cutting emissions remains the only way to limit the long-term intensification of El Niño and other climate extremes. For businesses and content creators, the lesson is equally practical: understand the trend, anticipate the disruptions, and position your content and products to serve people navigating a more volatile world.
