Car test: Renault Twingo E-Tech, Low-Cost Electric Car

Lifestyle
The Renault Twingo E-Tech can boast of great performance. (

AUTO: The electric Renault Twingo costs more than the Dacia Spring but even if it offers less autonomy, its services are better.

When looking for the cheapest electric car, it is impossible not to approach the Dacia Spring. Now offered at €20,800 at the entry-level, the little Romanian remains the least expensive electric vehicle on the current market.

Facing it, the Renault Twingo E-Tech seems much more expensive with an entry price of €24,050. Especially since it has smaller batteries of 22 kWh (against 27.4 kWh at the Dacia), only allowing a maximum autonomy of 190 kilometers officially (against 230 kilometers at the Spring).

So, do you have to be crazy to prefer the French to the Romanian of Chinese origin? Not so fast: at this price, the small Renault Twingo can still boast of different services.

A well-finished car

The Twingo will struggle to play upscale vehicles with its pocket-size dimensions and fairly plain interior. But it still benefits from a much better finish than that of the Dacia, while offering a warmer atmosphere and a level of equipment at least as good (Apple Carplay & Android Auto, automatic air conditioning, reversing camera, etc.).

It also offers much better driving sensations, with a better-held body, advantageous performance and much greater rigor on the road and on the motorway. It is also more efficient in consumption so that the autonomy remains quite close in absolute terms between the two cars.

Admittedly, Twingo does not benefit from the fast charging capacity, unlike the Romanian. But it still accepts a power of 22 kW in alternating current, which allows you to recharge to 70% in just over 40 minutes.

Its autonomy can exceed 200 kilometers in the city but it will be closer to 120 kilometers if you only do the highway. Yes, we are talking about cars primarily intended for urban use…

The price of the finish

Our top-of-the-range “Techno” version costs €26,750, i.e. almost €9,000 more than a petrol Twingo with similar equipment (remember that there is still an ecological bonus of €6,000 or 5 €000 from January 1 , 2023).

For comparison, a top-of-the-range Dacia Spring costs €22,100. In terms of quality and finish, the difference of €4,650 seems justified in any case: the Twingo gives more for its money.
