This Monday 17th June 2019, in Rennes, the French team faced Nigeria for its last group match of the Womens World Cup.

For their last group match of the World Cup, the Blues beat with difficulty Nigeria (1-0), Monday, June 17, 2019, in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine ). They finish first in their group and start the round of 16 with more serenity.

France is now meeting Sunday in Le Havre to face the third group C, D or E in 8th. Even if the calculations are hard to do before the end of the first round, it could be Australia or Brazil, in Pool C.


In a Rennes stadium full of eggs, the French were greeted by a superb Marseillaise, sung by some 29,000 Breton spectators.




Poor start of the match

From the beginning of the match, the French have tried to put the intensity, against a strong Nigerian team defensively. Very tense, they had a hard time building the game. None of their attempts found the frame in the first half, as the shot by Viviane Asseyi next from the 11th minute.


At the 14th on a centre of Amel Majri, Valérie Gauvin placed a header that went to a good meter above the opposing side.

But in the 17th, on a corner, captain Amandine Henry, on a nice recovery volley, missed the frame of little.

Determination

At the beginning of the second period, the French women were more determined, despite some technical waste and a Nigerian attack to absent subscribers.

At the 53rd, after a mess in the Nigerian surface, Delphine Cascarino almost found the goal.


Corinne Diacre, who had wanted to spare his managers with four changes in his starting lineup, had to resolve to bring Eugenie Le Sommer and Kadidiatou Diani in the 63rd minute.

Bretonne of the stage, Le Sommer was entitled to a big ovation of the spectators of Roazhon Park.


On a nice deep exchange in the 65th, Gaëtane Thiney lacked length to slip the ball into Nigerian nets.

Double penalty

After a delusional scenario, Wendy Renard scored a penalty. She missed the first, awarded by the VAR, after a foul by Ngozi Ebere, who received a double yellow card. Another penalty kick was whistled due to the position of the goalkeeper’s feet on the goal line (new rule).


At the end of the match, the French continued to push in front of goal, missing the frame several times

Attention to USA

Les Bleues can certainly say they have made a faultless three victories with South Korea 4-0, Norway 2-1 and Nigeria-France.


But the eventual quarter-final that could take place against the United States, world champions in title and impressive since the beginning of the tournament, is scary.
