Lecornu Government: Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu Resigns, Macron Accepts

RECORD HOLDER: Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron, who accepted it, after only 27 days in office, becoming the most short-lived Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic
rance is plunging a little deeper into instability. Twenty-seven days after being appointed by Emmanuel Macron, the Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu handed over Monday resignation to the President of the Republic. The latter accepted it, announced the Elysée, in a press release published immediately. Appointed on September 9 in Matignon, the former Minister of the Armed Forces was under fire from opponents and the right after revealing part of his government on Sunday evening. His ministerial team only lasted around twelve hours.
Sébastien Lecornu becomes the most short-lived Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic. He was to deliver his general policy declaration to the Assembly on Tuesday and give his main budgetary guidelines on this occasion. His resignation plunges France into a political crisis unprecedented for several decades, and places Emmanuel Macron on the front line, while calls flourish for a new dissolution, or even a resignation of the head of state. The country has had five prime ministers since the re-election of Emmanuel Macron in May 2022.
The return of Bruno Le Maire, one choice too many
The appointment of Sébastien Lecornu had already aroused the disapproval of the left and the National Rally, who have continued to brandish the threat of rapid censorship unless there is a clear break in the policy pursued.
The Republicans have increased the pressure in recent days by conditioning their participation on additional commitments from the Prime Minister, particularly on immigration. They also required having a third of ministerial positions. The unveiling of the ministerial team on Sunday evening, which gives pride of place to renewals and marks the return to government of the former Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, held responsible for the budgetary situation, has finally inflamed the situation.
