Barnier government: Who is Annie Genevard, New Minister of Agriculture

The vice-president of the National Assembly was appointed Minister of Agriculture this Saturday 21st  September 2024. She takes over from Marc Fesneau, in office since May 2022.

It was a predictable name. The vice-president of the National Assembly and executive The Republicans prominent Annie Genevard lands a place in the government of Michel Barnier presented this Saturday 21st September 2024.

If we were waiting for this former professor of literature in Education, the 68-year-old MP would land a very different ministry that of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty. She succeeds Marc Fesneau, in office since May 2022.

A strong anchor in Doubs

After winning her Capes, Annie Genevard teaches classics in a high school in Morteau in the Doubs, her department of birth.

But the daughter of a deputy quickly entered politics and joined the Rally for the Republic (RPR) from 1996.

Elected to the municipal council in Morteau, Franc-Comtoise became one mayor in 2002. A function that she retains until 2017.

In 2012, the trained teacher was nominated by the UMP for the legislative elections in the 5th constituency of Doubs. This marks her entry into the hemicycle, where she has been sitting ever since, without having experienced the slightest interruption.

In 2017, she mourned her position as mayor of Morteau due to the law of non-cumulative mandates… but was elected vice-president of the National Assembly.

An LR executive close to François Fillon

RPR, UMP then LR… It is a loyalist of the right since 1996 who enters the government this Saturday 21st September. In 2014, Nicolas Sarkozy, then president of the UMP, appointed her national secretary of the party for the animation of the federations.

The party changes its name, but the protagonists remain the same. In 2016, she was appointed spokesperson republicans (LR). For the presidential election of the following year, the MP supports François Fillon.

The latter’s victory in the LR primary allows him to climb the party ladder a little further. She became deputy secretary general, in tandem with Gérald Darmanin, then with a certain Eric Ciotti.

Secretary general of the Republicans since 2023, she is on the front line to manage the “Ciotti crisis” after he decided on an agreement with the national gathering on behalf of the LR for the last legislative elections.

Re-elected in 2024, Franc-Comtoise also returns to her position as vice-president of the National Assembly.
