Tour de France: the 19th stage stopped after a shower of hail

A new twist on the Tour de France this Friday 26th July 2019 after the abandonment of Thibaut Pinot. The organisation of the race had to stop the event because of the weather

The 19th stage of the Tour de France was stopped permanently because of the state of the road, impassable due to a shower of hail, Friday, shortly before Val d’Isère, announced the organization.

Subject to formalization by the jury of commissioners, Bernal will endorse the yellow jersey Tour two days before the arrival and the eve of the last mountain stage in Val Thorens.

The times are indeed taken at the summit of Iseran crossed in the lead by the Colombian Egan Bernal (Ineos), said the organization.

Stopped on the descent of Iseran

A sudden downpour of hail made the race route impractical shortly before Val d’Isère about 25 kilometres from the finish in Tignes.

The riders were stopped in the descent of Iseran and took place in the vehicles of their teams.

“The road is covered with hail at the end of a tunnel,” the organizers said.

At the time of the stop, Bernal was leading the race with British Simon Yates.

The wearer of the yellow jersey, Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe , swung to the top of the Iseran with a delay slightly more than two minutes.
