Storm Miguel: The Orange Alert Extended to 10 Departments of the West

Meteo France forecasts wind gusts of 110 to 120 km/h accompanied by rain this Friday 7th June 2019 with the arrival of Storm Miguel. Update on forecasts.

Meteo France has placed two new departments in alertness to the winds, Sarthe and Loir-et-Cher , this Friday 7th June, 2019, according to its latest forecast. In total, 10 departments are affected by this alert.

The eight other departments always followed are:

  • the Charente-Maritime,
  • Indre,
  • Indre-et-Loire,
  • the Loire-Atlantique,
  • the Maine-et-Loire,
  • the Deux-Sèvres,
  • the Vendée
  • and the Vienne.

Arrival on the Atlantic coast in the night, the depression Miguel continues its progress towards the east of the country , indicates the meteorological institute:

“The wind is oriented to the south-south-east sector weak to moderate, but it has already turned south-southwest on the coast and the islands of Aquitaine to the Vendée. Meanwhile, the wind begins to strengthen at the beginning of the day on the Atlantic coast. Gusts of 118 km/h were recorded at Saint-Clément des Baleines, 111 km/h at Chassiron, 110 km/h at Cap-Ferret, 106 km/h at Ile d’Yeu.”

Gusts up to 120 km/h on the coast

This orange vigilance is expected until 19h Friday but the winds are expected to weaken significantly from the west from the middle of the afternoon, according to Meteo France.

In addition, most of France, with the exception of the Mediterranean and the Greater Toulouse area, is also placed in yellow vigilance.

Maximum gusts of 110 to 120 km/h are expected on the coast, from 100 to 110 km/h in the interior. Gusts of 118 km/h were recorded at Saint-Clément des Baleines, 111 km/h at Chassiron (Charente-Maritime), 110 km/h at Cap-Ferret (Gironde), 106 km/h at L’Ile d ‘Yeu (Vendée), indicates Météo France.

In Nantes, parks and gardens are closed to the public all day Friday, said the city.

In Vendée, all connections with the island of Yeu are cancelled for the day. For their part, the department’s firefighters have intervened about 35 times since morning, mainly for falling trees and materials, according to the Codis. One person was slightly injured, touched by a tarpaulin that flew away.

In La Roche-sur-Yon, the opening of the fair scheduled for Friday was postponed to Saturday “for security reasons ,  the organizers said on social networks. Similarly, in Parthenay (Deux-Sèvres), the fair is closed Friday.

In Charente-Maritime, the prefecture has banned traffic, limited to 50 km/h, on the bridge of the island of Oléron pedestrians, two wheels, vehicles with trailers, etc … under alert level 2.

The Île de Ré bridge remains on alert 1 with relatively similar traffic restrictions.

Finally, as a precautionary measure, traffic is interrupted until 5 pm on the Bordeaux-La Rochelle, Royan-Angoulême, Royan-Niort and Poitiers-La Rochelle lines.

Météo-France had described Thursday this storm of “medium intensity”, pointing out that it was “unusual at this time of year”.
