Alcohol consumption is prohibited during the nights of Saturday and Sunday near the Place de la Republique in Paris, which is where the #NuitDebout movement is installed, to avoid “excesses”, said the police headquarters.
Offenses “prosecuted and punished”
Saturday from 7pm until 7am Sunday morning, consumption, possession and transportation of alcoholic beverages are forbidden around the place de la Republique, except in licensed drinking establishments, according to an order issued Saturday by the police Commissioner. Possession of glass bottles and takeaway sales of alcohol is also prohibited in this area. Offences “will be prosecuted and punished,” the statement said.
The police department has justified the measure by the “many recorded regularly overflows during the dispersal of the movement” #NuitDebout. “These abuses and the deterioration of public order can clearly be made by the consumption of alcohol, which encourages the passage to the act in often violent groups of individuals, who do not hesitate to use glass containers as weapons,” said the prefecture.
Clashes last night
On the night of Friday to Saturday, clashes erupted when a hundred people clashed with the police on the sidelines of Place de la Republique. The Citizen movement #NuitDebout have been installed in Place de la Republique since the end of March. Twelve people were arrested and placed in custody.
