The Loire and Charente Still Threatening: The Floods will Continue all Weekend

Don’t be fooled by the lull in the weather. If the rain finally stops after 37 days of deluge, Vigicrues warns: the Loire and Charente have not yet reached their peak. The declines will be slow, and further disruptions could complicate the situation as early as next week.

Floods “will continue all weekend, or even beyond” in the West of France, despite the expected lull in precipitation, Vigicrues estimated on Friday.

“The lull in rains that is setting in absolutely does not mean for us an end to the floods” and “overall the declines will be very slow given the water levels that we have reached in the rivers and given the saturation of the current soils”, indicated Lucie Chadourne-Facon, director of the Vigicrues central service, during a videoconference.

Two sectors still rising in water levels

For the coming weekend, “the two main sectors of truly unusual floods are the Angers sector and the Loire downstream of Angers and then Charente in Charente-Maritime”, she said.

In these sectors, “we are still climbing (the waters) before reaching a high plateau which will remain in place for a certain time”, underlined the manager.

A lull in rains, but not floods

Weather-wise, after 37 consecutive days of rain in France and the passage of storm Pedro recently, “we have a relative lull over the coming days, we will see it from today (Friday) and especially tomorrow (Saturday)”, said Matthieu Plu, forecasting officer for Météo-France.

This “until the middle of next week, when there could be a new disruption”, he added, stressing however that the forecasts for this deadline remained marked by “a lot of uncertainty”.
