The price of certain packs of cigarettes, particularly premium brands, will increase on the 1st January 2026, with increases of up to 50 cents, according to a document published by Customs on Friday. For certain references of rolling tobacco, the price may increase by more than one euro.

Smokers hit their wallets. The prices of certain packs of cigarettes, particularly premium brands, will increase on the 1st January 2026. Increases of up to 50 cents, according to a document published by Customs on Friday.

This will particularly be the case for packages of Camel and Winston from the manufacturer Japan Tobacco International (JTI), which will increase to 13 euros. JTI, which is also increasing its rolling tobacco, will apply increases of 10 cents to more than one euro depending on the references.

The manufacturer Philip Morris International (PMI) has for its part decided to apply increases of around 50 cents on its cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco, in particular on its premium brands Marlboro Red or Philip Morris, several references of which exceed 13 euros.

Cigarette sales fell year-on-year

“We had rather absorbed the costs until now, there we decided to increase the prices which corresponds to the increase in our eco-contribution, the inflation of production costs and the increase in the share paid to tobacconists”, explains a spokesperson for Philip Morris International to AFP.

“The increase remains limited so as not to push buyers towards the illegal market and we are only increasing cigarettes, not alternative products like vaping which we wish to keep affordable”, he continues.

The manufacturer British American Tobacco (BAT, Dunhill, Lucky Strike..) is only increasing around ten references, mainly its cigarettes, increases ranging from 10 to 50 cents, according to the Customs price list. Imperial Brands – Seita (Fortuna, Gauloises…) is applying 10 cent increases on most of its cigarette brands.

Cigarette sales fell by more than 11% in volume between November 2025 and November 2024, and by more than 15% for hand-rolling tobacco, according to data published Friday by Customs.

For the president of the Confederation of Tobacconists Serdar Kaya “this umpteenth price change is a new opportunity to further weaken our businesses in favor of organized crime”.

The State must react and no longer be content with collecting 87% taxes on the product. We need an appropriate response from him on smuggling and counterfeiting’, he lamented in a statement to AFP.
