The Disney + platform will arrive in France on March 31, 2020

STREAMING: The service from Disney will be available for 6.99 euros per month

We finally know the arrival date of Disney +  in France. From March 31, 2020, French viewers will have access to the streaming platform of the American giant of entertainment.

The release date has been made official this Thursday night via Twitter. The service will be available for 6.99 euros per month and will include films and series from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic catalogues, among others. Disney + will feature more than 7,500 episodes of the series, including the 30 Simpsons seasons, and 500 films, including some 100 new or recent films. No less than 620 films and over 10,000 episodes of series are planned within 5 years.

In France, Disney + will be marketed live, via an application, on computers, tablets, televisions connected, etc. Only Canal + should market the service in its box, as a paid option or in bundled offers.

Tests in the Netherlands

Disney + is expected next Tuesday in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands, and the following week in Australia and New Zealand. Disney had announced an exit in the first quarter of 2020 in several European countries. On March 31, the service will also be available in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The Dutch had access to a trial version of Disney +, before the official launch. At a conference for financial analysts, Disney boss Bob Iger said he was satisfied with the tests: “The platform is robust and all elements are in place to manage the scaling up. He also said that “the demographic range of our audiences is broader than what people expect, it goes well beyond children and families. ”

“Securities may vary by territory”

“More countries will be announced soon” announced the firm on its Twitter account, stating that “the titles may vary by territory”. Indeed, the contents of Disney catalogues are currently distributed by different local actors depending on the country: the entertainment giant will probably renegotiate some rights.

In France, the films will be available only three years after their release in theatres, against three months across the Atlantic, because of the chronology of the media. However, the original titles created for the platform like The Mandalorian should not be concerned with these rights issues.

The battle of the platforms

Disney hopes to attract between 60 and 90 million subscribers on its platform by 2024. It will compete with Netflix (nearly 160 million subscribers), Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV + (online for a week), and soon Peacock (NBCUniversal) and HBO Max (WarnerMedia).

Bob Iger also announced that Disney’s streaming platform, Hulu, will soon air 21 Century Fox programs, bought in December 2017. US Disney D23 members will be able to subscribe to Disney +, Hulu and ESPN + sports channels for $ 12.99.
