INSEE has studied the living conditions of the inhabitants of 22 medium-sized towns in the Pays de la Loire region. The situation is very contrasted.
Is the Pays de la Loire region spared by poverty? This is the overall result of a study published by the National Institute of Statistics and European Studies (INSEE) this Thursday 11th April, 2019.
With 13% of inhabitants under the poverty line (against 17% at the national level). But the picture is however more nuanced according to the territories.
24 medium-sized towns in the spotlight
The institute also focused on 24 medium-sized towns in the region and analysed the living conditions of the inhabitants. Sign of territorial disparity, the poverty rate varies between 7% and 18% depending on the town.
Poverty is more present in Châteaubriant (Loire-Atlantique) and Sablé-sur-Sarthe (Sarthe) where it affects almost one inhabitant in five, points INSEE:
“The median standard of living is lower in these fragile cities: it rises from € 18,400 in Sablé-sur-Sarthe to € 19,300 in Fontenay-le-Comte against € 20,300 for all medium-sized towns.”
According to INSEE, the factors of vulnerability differ according to the zones but are known: high rate of unemployment, important rate of workers and employees among the assets, presence of single-parent families, demographic decline of the territory …
Being poor means what?
An individual is considered poor when he lives in a household whose standard of living is below the poverty line. In 2015, it was 1015 euros net per month.
