The link between damaged speed radars and road deaths

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner has revised upwards, Friday 1st March, the number of targets of speed radars since last November and the beginning of the movement of yellow vests. And is the link with the rise in mortality in January.

Christophe Castaner was the guest of the interview of the “4 truths”, this Friday, in Télématin , on France 2. The Minister of the Interior has in particular communicated on the state of the park about 3,200 French speed radars. According to his information, “about 75%” have been “either destroyed, damaged, attacked or neutralised” since the beginning of the Yellow Vests movement in November. It is “a direct link” to the increase in road mortality observed last January, compared with January 2018 .

“There are radars that are hidden, except that in fact they continue to record speed, even if they do not do photography. And, on average, in December, there were four times more offenses in the vicinity of a masked radar. 400%. And in the end, it’s dead, “says Christophe Castaner.

At the beginning of January, the tenant of the place Beauvau had already communicated a figure on the state of the radars in France. “Nearly 60% of the radars today have been neutralised, attacked, destroyed by those who claim this movement,” he said then about the yellow vests crisis.

Radars have also been the subject of increasing anger since the summer on the part of motorists and motorcyclists opposed  to the reduction of 90 to 80 km/h  of the speed limit on secondary roads double meaning without central separator, entered into force on July 1st.
Last January, 238 people lost their lives on the roads of France. An  increase after a “historic” decline in the number of deaths throughout the year 2018, with 3,503 killed in mainland France and overseas.
