Dark music
Regarded as one of the spearheads of the new generation of American hip-hop, XXXTentacion gained stardom by publishing its tracks on the SoundCloud platform. His music, very dark and with muffled sounds, often evoked his depression and his past as a criminal.
The rapper, whose stage name evokes the unknown, pornography and the Spanish word meaning “temptation”, is the most renowned hip-hop artist killed in recent years, after a wave of assassinations targeted in the years 1990.
His second studio album, “?,” Had taken first place in March, without any traditional promotion, the first place in the Billboard rankings.
controversies
With his spiky dreadlocks on his head, his face often covered with a black and white mask, XXXTentacion suddenly became famous less than a year after publishing his song “Look at Me! On SoundCloud.
He was at the center of controversy because of the violence in which he was involved.
Already convicted of assault, he was waiting, in full wave #MeToo, his trial in a case where he was accused of beating his former pregnant girlfriend.
In an interview with the Miami New Times in June, she said she had been abused for a whole summer in 2016, especially after a positive pregnancy test.
The rapper had been kicked out by his mother and expelled from college for beating a classmate. He also stabbed his manager and fought with spectators in concert.
Compliments
His tracks had been momentarily removed in May from Spotify playlists, like those of other artists as part of a new editorial policy to no longer highlight artists who have “done something particularly harmful or hateful”. The streaming platform had retreated in early June after a heated debate accusing him of overriding his role.
The criticism, however, was gained from the rapper’s music, with his samples of alternative rock and reggaeton.
Kendrick Lamar, one of the most influential figures of hip-hop, had thus covered with compliments his first album, “17”, revealing an unprecedented bitterness.
Kanye West paid tribute to XXXTentacion on Twitter, writing, “I never told you how much you inspired me when you were there.”
