The young boxer Angélique Duchemin, world champion in boxing, died Tuesday morning in Perpignan, at the age of 26, following a discomfort during training.

The young woman, previously champion of France and Europe in the super featherweight category, fell ill on Monday night in her club Thuir (Pyrénées-Orientales) and suffered a cardiac arrest, before being transported by paramedics to Perpignan hospital, told Jacques Rovira, president of the regional committee of boxing Languedoc Roussillon and the boxing club Perpignan where the girl had started at the age of 7 years.

She died, apparently of a pulmonary embolism, Tuesday morning at the hospital, added Mr. Rovira, who followed in his athletic career. An autopsy is to be performed in Montpellier.

Graduated in boxing at the Thuir club she founded, she was twice champion of France and Europe in December 2015 and world champion on 12 May. She was to defend her title on the 12th October in Montpellier.  Her father, who also practiced boxing, died of a heart attack in 2013.

The president of the Occitan region Carole Delga said she was “very sad over the death of Angélique Duchemin, young Catalan world champion in boxing. Condolences to his family and loved ones, “ according to a tweet.



The Mayor of Perpignan Jean-Marc Pujol has also joined the “family pain and his sincere condolences to all the relatives” of the young high-level sports, according to a statement.
