Jean-Louis Gasset, Coach and Legendary Figure of French football, has Died at the Age of 72

FOOTBALL: An emblematic figure and voice of French football, Jean-Louis Gasset died Friday morning at the age of 72

This is very sad news for all fans of French football. The coach Jean-Louis Gasset died Friday at the age of 72, according to information published by the Montpellier club and since confirmed by our colleagues from L’equipe.

The former midfielder spent almost his entire playing career at Montpellier, a club co-founded by his father Bernard, before coaching there and continuing his coaching adventure Saint-etienne, Bordeaux and at l’Olympique de Marseille.

A legendary duo with Laurent Blanc on the bench

In the meantime, Gasset had become the indestructible assistant of Laurent Blanc, with whom he formed a perfect duo, first on the bench of the Girondins de Bordeaux, with whom he won the French championship in 2009, before continuing their adventure common with the French team between 2010 and 2012 then at PSG from 2013 to 2016. He subsequently led the Ivory Coast team (2022-2024) as main coach before taking the reins of OM during the season.

Although he had announced his retirement following his Olympian adventure, Gasset had finally returned to service to try to save the MHSC from relegation last season, in vain. The man with the legendary cap and a voice like no other had finally become a consultant for Ligue 1 + since the start of the season. We will all miss his in-depth analyses, his knowledge of the championship and his immense kindness.
