Born in Arcachon, Timothy Loubineaud made speed skating history by setting a new world record over 5,000 meters in Salt Lake City

Frenchman Timothy Loubineaud, 29, set a new world record to win the Salt Lake City 5,000m on Friday at the opening of the Speed Skating World Cup, three months before the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games.

“This world record is a little unexpected”, commented Timothy Loubineaud after completing the distance in 6 min 00 sec 23/100, quoted by the French Roller and Sketboard Federation which has overseen speed skating for two years. “To be honest, I thought about it this morning when I got up, giving myself a goal (…) but I admit that it was more of a dream than anything else, I really didn’t expect it. It’s madness! added the 29-year-old skater.

Increased confidence before the Olympics

“I did my race without pretension and to win this World Cup, with a world record, in Salt Lake City, on one of the fastest tracks in the world, it’s crazy. And all the more so in front of champions like Metodej Jilek and Sander Eitrem”, he savored having been full of confidence for the competitions to come.

The season will reach its peak at the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games, from the 6th to 22nd February 2026.
