With Gaël Monfils and Fiona Ferro, only two French players will participate in the 3rd round of the US Open.

Benoit Paire sank his game and in his wake, the French armada suffered a defeat Thursday, August 29, 2019 at 2nd round of the US Open, only Gael Monfils, solid and spectacular, and Fiona Ferro passed.

The main surprise of the day comes from the elimination of world No.4 Simona Halep by the American Taylor Townsend, 116yh and qualifying result.

Exit then Mladenovic, Cornet, Pair, Barrere, Puglia, Chardy, Hoang and Simon (injured).

The ultimate discomfort was reached during the match sabotaged by pair (30th worldwide) Slovenian Aljaz Bedene face (80th ) after the party, the tricolour No.2 did not even shake hands with his opponent. He explained that the latter had insulted him several times during the match.

But what a mess! Paire led 5-3 and 40/0 with three match points on his 4th set … But then he let go 11 points in a row (!) That allowed Bedene to equalize at 5-5. and lead 30-0. Then a new series of 6 points allowed the Slovenian to win the round 7-5.

And in the 5th set, Paire took the service of his opponent to lead 3-0, then 4-1 … But he still committed 6 unforced errors in the tie break.

In total, he committed 99 unforced errors!

First for Ferro

Much more logically, Grégoire Barrère, 109th world and qualifying, did not weigh heavily against the Belgian David Goffin (15th).

“Today I was a little slower than usual, I did a little less well, and it does not forgive against a player of this level that plays very well for a while,” commented 25 years of French swept 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in less than an hour and half.  Less time than it took in Fiona Ferro (74th) to beat Kristina Mladenovic ( 54th), 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3.

However confident after her victory in the first round against the former World N1 and winner of the 2016 US Open Angelique Kerber, Mladenovic lost in 2.5 hours.

“I think it was a fairly average performance on my part, I do not wish to take anything away from Fiona who made his match, but there were far too many downs in this match that cost me.”

Ferro will play for the first time in 22 years, a 3 e round in Grand Slams.

Lucas Pouille (26th ) read also left Flushing Meadows prematurely, leaving Daniel Evans (58th ) who won 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, the dreaded honour to challenge Roger Federer in 3rd.

Fortunately for the French clan, Monfils has held his rank … and his showman role that appeals to the American public.

After a solid match against Marius Copil, he finished on a smash easy, but he complicated the execution by a “trick”: a jump of 360 ° before slamming the ball.

“We only retain the match ball, but I did not have fun at all, I was very serious “throughout the match.”

Osaka finds the game

Naomi Osaka experienced fewer difficulties than 1st round to eliminate Polish Magda Linette (53rd ) 6-2, 6-4. The defending champion, whose world throne is at stake at Flushing Meadows, took half the time to dismiss Linette (1:11) that she had not needed the previous round (2:28) against Anna Blinkova who had him took a sleeve.

Daniil Medvedev (5th) had to fight cramps to dominate Dellien Hugo (84th), while Alexander Zverev (6th) has “given everything” to overcome Frances Tiafoe.

Rafael Nadal, whose half of the table has already been decimated by his seed, has earned an extra day of rest. He takes advantage of the package of his Australian opponent Thanasi Kokkinakis (203rd) to go without playing 3rd round.
