Prison Overcrowding: Urvoas wants to build up to 16,000 new cells by 2025

Jean-Jacques Urvoas, the Justice Minister, said on Tuesday it will build between 10,309 and 16,143 new cells by 1 January 2025 to allow the generalization of solitary confinement in prisons.

 

 

2,500 specific cells claimed

The Justice Minister was speaking at a press conference in the penitentiary of Fresnes (Val-de-Marne) to report on individual cells, a principle enshrined in law since 1875 but never met.

The minister “asked more than a billion in 2017 to build 3,900 cells in Ile-de-France, PACA region and in the Toulouse region,” says our reporter on site.

 


Jean-Jacques Urvoas also claimed 2,500 specific cells in the preparation of neighborhoods to the exit.
