Decathlon World Champion Kévin Mayer of France failed in the long jump at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin on Tuesday. He decided to give up.

The French had the best time of the first of the ten events over 100m (10s 64s), but failed to make a measured jump to length.
Disillusionment
This is a huge disappointment for the French team, Mayer was the grand favorite of the event. “The main goal is to be European champion. It would be my first decathlon,” he claimed as he arrived in Germany.
“As we have this margin, we are even more afraid of doing zero,” he said.
Mayer, 26, landed his first title last year in London , winning gold in the open air, before going on to win gold at the indoor Worlds at the heptathlon in March.
This season, he prepared the European event with a program à la carte Diamond League, and participating in some events of the Decathlon Ratingen in Germany in mid-June.
