La Poste Hit by Another Major Cyberattack on New Year’s Day — Pro-Russian Hackers Strike Again

La Poste Hit Again: A Troubling Start to the New Year

France’s national postal operator, La Poste, began 2026 on a rocky note after confirming yet another major cyberattack on New Year’s Day — just a week after a similar attack had crippled its online services during Christmas.

Visitors to the La Poste website were greeted with a message acknowledging the attack, explaining that systems were “currently facing a cyberattack.” While package tracking and online services were disrupted, postal deliveries and basic mail operations reportedly continued as normal.

A Repeat Attack After Christmas Disruptions

This latest incident follows an earlier distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that hit La Poste from December 22nd to 26th, 2025, disrupting parcel tracking and access to La Banque Postale services.
The group NoName057(16) — a pro-Russian hacking collective — claimed responsibility for that Christmas attack.

These so-called “hacktivists” are notorious for targeting European infrastructure and Western allies of Ukraine. Over the past two years, the group has been linked to more than 70,000 cyberattacks worldwide, striking airports, public institutions, and government websites including French city halls, the RATP (Paris public transport network), and even the French National Assembly.

How La Poste Is Responding

La Poste reassured users that no sensitive customer information had been stolen. The company confirmed that the attacks aimed primarily to flood servers and cause operational disruption, not to breach data security.

Despite the challenges, the postal service managed to maintain delivery performance, processing over 5.5 million parcels during the affected week, including 2 million on Christmas Eve alone. Services were restored temporarily on December 26th, though it now appears that hackers were undeterred and returned for another round of attacks just days later.

La Poste continues to work with French cybersecurity authorities, including the National Cyber Unit (UNC) and the French intelligence service (DGSI), to identify the perpetrators and strengthen digital defenses against future attacks.

A Warning for French and European Infrastructure

This second cyberattack in such a short time highlights growing vulnerabilities in critical public services. Experts say that DDoS attacks are becoming increasingly targeted, testing the resilience of national infrastructure across Europe.

Cybersecurity analysts warn that as global tensions rise — particularly with the ongoing war in Ukraine — supportive actions by pro-Russian groups in cyberspace are likely to intensify in frequency and impact.

Businesses and institutions in France are being urged to review their own security protocols, backup systems, and server protections, especially as France prepares for a busy 2026 calendar that includes major national and international events.
