Ramadan 2019 will begin Monday, May 6 in France

During this timeof Ramadan, believers are encouraged to abstain from drinking, eating and having sex, from dawn to sunset.

The date of the beginning of Ramadan , this holy month for Islam, was set for Monday 6th May by the French Council of Muslim worship , after a meeting of major Muslim federations, Saturday 4th May, 2019.

The announcement of this date was made by the Great Mosque of Paris , in the presence of the office of the CFCM, representatives of the main federations of the second religion of France, and the rector of the Muslim Institute of the Mosque of Paris, Dalil Boubakeur .

“As the crescent of the new moon was not visible on Saturday, Ramadan will start on Monday,” according to the CFCM.

During Ramadan, believers are encouraged to abstain from drinking, eating, and having sex, from dawn to sunset.

Fasting is prescribed to pubescent Muslims. Exemptions are provided for travellers, the sick, the elderly, pregnant women or those who have just given birth.

Ramadan will end with Eid al-Fitr , the “fast-breaking festival,” which is scheduled to take place this year on June 5th, 2019.
