Suspension of Pension Reform: How Much will the Measure Cost?

BEWARE OF “THE DEFICIT”: This measure should “ultimately benefit 3.5 million French people” but represents a significant cost with “400 million euros in 2026 and 1.8 billion euros in 2027”
Sébastien Lecornu proposed Tuesday the suspension of the pension reform “until’presidential election ” of 2027. It will relate to the age measurement and the contribution period, as requested by the socialists. “This suspension should ultimately benefit 3.5 million French people”, indicates the Prime Minister.
“No age increase will take place from now until January 2028, as specifically requested by the CFDT. In addition, the insurance period will also be suspended and will remain at 170 quarters until January 2028”, he specifies.
1.8 billion euros in 2027
According to Sébastien Lecornu, “the cost of the suspension for our retirement system is 400 million euros in 2026 and 1.8 billion euros in 2027”. The reform “must therefore be compensated financially, including through savings measures”. It cannot “be done at the cost of an increased deficit”, he warned.
The Prime Minister underlined his desire to preserve “the credibility of our country” in the eyes of “lenders on the financial markets”. “We cannot place our country in lasting dependence on foreign lenders and I will not be the Prime Minister of a slippage in public accounts”, he assured.
