Like the Danish brewery Carlsberg, Coca-Cola, The Absolut Company and L’Oréal also aim to advance sustainable packaging.
No more glass and metal, instead of cardboard. The Danish company Carlsberg has unveiled two new prototypes of “paper bottle”, the first in the world according to them for beer.
Made from sustainable wood fiber, the packaging would be 100% organic and fully recyclable. A concept that has attracted other companies in the industry, Coca-Cola Company, The Absolut Company and L’Oreal, launched towards a common goal of reducing waste.
Two prototypes with polymers
The two prototypes introduced in Denmark in early October 2019 have an internal barrier that allows bottles to contain beer : “One prototype uses a thin film barrier made from recycled PET polymer, and the other a PEF 100 polymer film barrier. % biobased, “says the company in a statement.
“These prototypes will be used to test the barrier technology because Carlsberg is looking for a solution to achieve its ultimate ambition: a 100% polymer-based, non-polymer based bottle. ”
If marketing is not yet on the agenda, Carlsberg Vice President of Development Myriam Shingleton is optimistic:
“Innovation takes time and we will continue to work with leading experts to overcome the latest technical issues, as we did with our Snap Pack reducing plastic.”
Coca and L’Oréal hired
Seduced by the concept, Coca-Cola Company, The Absolut Company (Pernod Ricard) and L’Oreal will join Carlsberg in a community of paper bottles, Paboco.
In 2018, the Danish brewer introduced a number of innovations in the packaging field, including recycled shrink wrap, green label ink and Snap Pack, which replaces the plastic wrap around its six cans by a solution sticking the boxes together. In the end, Carlsberg plans to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2030.
On October 11, Coca Cola announced a world first: the manufacture of a soda bottle from marine plastic waste, from beaches and the Mediterranean Sea.
