This Sunday is the 4th edition of Car Free Day in Paris . Between 11 am and 6 pm, the entire capital, except the ring road, is subject to traffic restrictions.
An operation set up to “make public space less polluted, more pleasant and more peaceful,” says the city of Paris .

Some vehicles allowed to circulate
“With the exception of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th districts, the public transport, taxis and VTC will be able to circulate in Paris at the maximum speed of 30 km / h”, indicates on its website the Paris police headquarters .
“For the first 4 districts, only public transport and taxis will be allowed (at a maximum speed of 20km/h). Residents can use their vehicle only to leave Paris or to return to their home (as such, they are advised to bring a proof of address).”
In case of non-compliance with these instructions, motorists risk a fine of 35 euros.

No traffic one Sunday per month
On the eve of this day, Saturday, September 15, Anne Hidalgo and Philippe Close, the mayors of Paris and Brussels, proposed that a European car-free day be set up every year, an idea submitted on Sunday when Car Free Day 2018 takes place in these two capitals.
“Faced with the climatic urgency and the health impact of pollution”, the two municipal authorities are calling in a statement that “a thousand car-free days are flourishing across Europe”, and take as a model the European Days of Heritage, including the 2018 edition also takes place this weekend.
The mayor of Paris had also announced Friday that the first four districts, which form part of the center of the capital (islands of the City and St. Louis, Châtelet, Louvre, Opera, Marais, …) would be closed to motor traffic one Sunday per month from 7 October , except for the main roads that cross them.

According to the Paris City Hall, intramural motor traffic registered a “record” drop of 6% between 2017 and 2018. Air pollution was reduced “in comparable proportions”.
