According to a study by the INRIX institute, which has looked at more than 200 cities in the world, Bordeaux is one of the cities where we spend the most hours in traffic jams.
Worse than Mexico City , Moscow , Rio de Janeiro or Brussels … According to a study published by the INRIX Institute , which compared more than 200 cities in 38 different countries , Bordeaux (Gironde) is one of the the most congested cities in the world .
It’s not necessarily better for Montpellier, Nantes, Lyon, Toulouse or Lille.
Bordeaux behind Paris
In the year 2018, the average Bordeaux driver would have spent an average of 223 hours in traffic jams . In France, there is only in Paris where it’s worse with 237 hours !
Traffic Jams: Lille is doing the best
Among the other cities in France most affected by traffic jams, Montpellier (Herault) is on the third step with 163 hours per year. Nantes (Loire-Atlantique) follows closely with 160h, then Lyon (Rhone) with 141h or Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhone) with 140h.
Traffic is also very complicated in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne) and Nice (Alpes Maritimes) with 140 hours spent in traffic jams per year, on average. Lille (Nord) is doing best with “only” 114 cumulative hours.
Note that traffic in the city center is more complicated in Bordeaux than in Paris with nine minutes to travel 1.6 km while it takes only five to Toulouse or Lille …
Nantes, the biggest increase
In 2018, compared to 2017, the trend is clearly to increase the time spent in traffic jams except in Nice (-1%) and Toulouse (0%). In Nantes, 22% more hours are spent and 12% in Bordeaux, which confirms its status as one of the most congested cities in the world.
Indeed, London (England) , known for its congested traffic, is almost neck and neck with the prefecture of Gironde with 227 hours counted. In the same waters, we find Milan (Italy) with 226 hours per year.
Bogota, world capital of traffic jams
The podium of the most bottled cities in the world is composed in the order of Bogota (Colombia) , Rome (Italy) and Dublin (Ireland) .
In 2017, according to INRIX always, the podium was trusteed by Los Angeles (United States), Moscow (Russia) and New York (United States) with figures much lower than in 2018: the palm goes back to the Californian city with an average of 102 hours per year. That’s two times less than in Bordeaux in 2018 .
