A dedicated digital channel
France 2 and France 3 will broadcast all competitions “live, deferred and extracts in its various programs”, according to Franceinfo, which also mentioned the creation of a dedicated digital channel.
“It’s the best scenario. A very consistent decision because France Televisions has the Olympic culture. They broadcast the Games for a long time and follow all the year the great competitions of swimming, athletics, tennis and cycling, “greeted the Parisian Tony Estanguet, President of the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (OCOG) of Paris .
“The # JO2024 will be clear and free for all on the public service (…) A major sports and media event,” tweeted Hervé Godechot, member of the Higher Council of Audiovisual.
The price of the deal was not disclosed, but by the end of 2017, Discovery had estimated that Paris-2024’s rights were “at least the price paid for a football World Cup”.
In full on Eurosport
TF1 had thus paid 130 million euros for the rights of the last World Cup, while France Televisions had spent 50 million for those of Rio 2016 Games.
Discovery (owner of Eurosport) has acquired from the IOC the broadcasting rights for Europe for the Winter and Summer Games from 2018 to 2024.
If France Télévisions broadcast Paris-2024 in the clear, Eurosport will offer the events in full to its subscribers, or 3000 hours of program in two weeks, according to the Parisian.
“We will be live from the first minute of the opening ceremony to the last of the closing ceremony. Many events will be on France Televisions, with fantastic audiences, but sports fans will see on Eurosport every minute of each discipline, “said the CEO of Discovery International Jean-Briac Perrette.
“We will create throughout the duration of the Games several event chains. Each will be dedicated to a particular discipline, “he added.
