François Bayrou Hospitalized in Pau after a “Very Severe” Flu

François Bayrou, 74-year-old former Prime Minister and mayor of Pau, was hospitalized this Monday at the Pau hospital center due to flu which requires medical monitoring for a few days

The ex-Prime Minister François Bayrou, mayor of Pau, was hospitalized this Monday due to a ” flu very severe which requires medical monitoring, announced the town hall. The former head of government (December 2024-September 2025), aged 74, was treated at the Pau hospital centre, the city said in a press release.

“His state of health is improving but requires monitoring by medical teams for a few more days. He will therefore not be able to participate in the municipal council this Monday, nor in the Community Council scheduled for Thursday” and his agenda for the week is canceled, added the municipality. On the 5th December during a citizens’ forum in Pau, François Bayrou announced that he had the flu, according to the daily The Republic of the Pyrenees.

According to the bulletin on the 10th December from Public Health France, influenza activity was “increasing sharply” at the beginning of December in the country, with all French regions moving to epidemic alert level, with the exception of Corsica (pre-epidemic). Mayor of Pau since 2014, François Bayrou is expected to run for a third term but has not yet formalized his intentions for them municipal elections from march.
